AM26-MO-16-L - Understanding Models of Transfusion Medicine

Proposed Session Description: The effective use of model systems for studies in transfusion medicine is key to advancement in the field. Moreover, a clear understanding of such model systems is critical for responsible and effective literature review by both physicians and researchers seeking to contextualize new scientific discoveries with the potential to positively shape patient care. Well-established in vitro and in vivo preclinical models have reliably provided critical insight for many years that has progressed clinical practice significantly and will continue to do so. More recently, however, scientific advance has allowed for development of various alternative models, including advanced culture techniques, organoid development, and the regular use of bioinformatic and AI modeling for mechanistic insight into targeted approaches for more efficient experimental design. Given the recent NIH push for the replacement of animal models, this session will explore alternatives to these more established transfusion models, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of both old and new models and exploring the appropriate utility of each.
