Dr. Zaher Otrock is the Section Head of the Transfusion Medicine Service at Cleveland Clinic, a position he has held since July 2023. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, he served as Associate Director of Transfusion Medicine at Henry Ford Health from 2017 to 2023.
Dr. Otrock earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon. He subsequently completed a four-year research fellowship in Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, followed by a four-year residency in Clinical Pathology at the same institution. He later completed a one-year research scholarship in the Department of Hematologic Oncology at Cleveland Clinic before pursuing an additional residency in Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
In 2022, Dr. Otrock earned a PhD in Medical Sciences from Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands. His doctoral research focused on adult hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), with particular emphasis on the clinical characteristics, underlying triggers, diagnostic approaches, and prognostic factors associated with this life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome.
Dr. Otrock's academic and clinical interests include transfusion medicine, patient blood management, therapeutic apheresis, and quality improvement in laboratory medicine and transfusion practice. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters and is actively involved in research, education, and the advancement of transfusion medicine practice.
