Dr. Refaai is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Director of Transfusion Medicine/Blood Bank. He also holds several other roles at this institution, including Director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Laboratory, Director of the patient blood management program, Associate Director of the Automated Clinical Laboratory, and Associate Director of Therapeutic Apheresis at Wilmot Cancer Center.
Dr. Refaai earned his medical degree from Aleppo University School of Medicine in Syria. He completed a clinical pathology residency at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and a transfusion medicine fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Refaai is board-certified in clinical pathology. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the CAP, ASH, AABB, SABM, and Blood bank association of NY State. He is a reviewer for many scientific journals and NIH grant reviews.
Dr. Refaai maintains an active teaching and research schedule and has participated as principal investigator of several grant-funded and investigator-initiated clinical trials. He is the author or coauthor of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, editorials, book chapters, and clinical abstracts. Dr. Refaai is a frequently invited lecturer and has also delivered more than 50 platform and poster presentations at national and international congress meetings.
