Dr. Tobias (Toby) Cohen is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Assistant Director of Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Biotherapies at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is board-certified in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, with clinical responsibilities in both the Transfusion Medicine Service and Special Coagulation Laboratory. In these roles, he provides expert consultation for patients with complex coagulation disorders, including bleeding and thrombosis related to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support.
His clinical and educational work focuses on integrating advanced hemostasis diagnostics, such as viscoelastic testing, into real-time management pathways for critically ill patients. He has developed and delivered institutional training on coagulation testing interpretation, transfusion decision-making, and the management of coagulopathy in high-acuity settings across multiple specialties. His teaching portfolio includes resident and fellow didactics and multidisciplinary education for physicians, nurses, laboratory staff, and physician assistants.
His published work includes pragmatic clinical trials evaluating fibrinogen replacement strategies and discussion of conventional and modern coagulation testing that inform transfusion therapy in a wide variety of settings. He also contributes to quality improvement initiatives to improve timely recognition of coagulopathy, optimize transfusion practices, and enhance patient safety through data-driven approaches.
Through his combined expertise in clinical coagulation, transfusion medicine, and education, he brings a practical, evidence-informed perspective to the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of ECMO-induced coagulopathy, with emphasis on applying laboratory insights to improve bedside outcomes.
