Dr. O’Brien is a pathologist with expertise in transfusion medicine. In addition to her role as Medical Director of the Blood Bank at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, she served as the Clinical Pathology Residency Director from 2016-2024 and has been the Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Director at BIDMC since 2019.

After receiving her MD at Boston University School of Medicine, she received her training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, where she stayed on as a staff pathologist and Medical Director of the blood bank for four years. During that time, she also served as Medical Director of the Blood Bank at the Armed Forces Blood Bank Center in the Pacific Northwest. Following completion of her military service, she completed a fellowship in transfusion medicine at Puget Sound Blood Center (now Bloodworks Northwest), after which point, she was recruited to BIDMC.

She is involved at the national level related to her clinical expertise; she has served on the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) eLearning committee from 2016-2024 and served as chair from 2021-2024. She was also appointed chair of the Clinical Hemotherapy subsection of the AABB’s Transfusion Medicine Subsection Coordinating Committee in 2022. In her role as the AABB representative to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, and the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, she has presented on transfusion topics in obstetrics at national meetings.
