Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Dr. Bhoj is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a Principal Investigator at the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a physician-scientist who practices transfusion medicine. His translational research integrates cellular immunotherapy with immunology primarily in the context of autoimmunity and organ transplantation.
Dr. Bhoj was the first to report the effects of B-cell directed CAR T cell therapy on humoral immunity. That work laid the foundation for his subsequent work that 1) continued studies on humoral and cellular immunity, including vaccine responsiveness, following B cells/plasma cell directed CAR T therapy, and 2) efforts to leverage T cell immunotherapy to eliminate pathogenic immunity. One such application also pioneered by Dr. Bhoj’s group is the use of CAR T cells to desensitize transplant candidates, work that has led to an ongoing Phase I clinical trial. His team is actively developing next-generation CAR therapies to treat an array of non-malignant conditions and these have been recognized by multiple federal and foundation grants, publications, and patents.
