Dr. Vassallo is the Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of the largest independent US blood collector, Vitalant, where he is responsible for donor care, patient safety and research initiatives. He was trained in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Practicing Transfusion Medicine for 24 years, he previously spent 10 years as a hospital administrator, hospitalist, and ACGME Program Director. Dr. Vassallo has served on numerous AABB committees (chairing the COI TF, and DH&S / TTD Committees), on the board of the Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion Collaborative, and on editorial boards of transfusion medicine journals and textbooks.
