Colleen Gilstad, MD serves as Medical Director of the Transfusion Service at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with subspecialty expertise in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Gilstad completed her fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, pathology residency and internal medicine internship training at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and earned her MD from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the US Naval Academy and served 20 years in the United States Navy. Her work interests and peer reviewed publications have focused on transfusion reactions, patient blood management, transfusion safety, and complex transfusion decision making. She published the first observations of anaphylactic transfusion reactions to blood group B components associated with IgE to alpha gal.
She is a member of the AABB and has participated in professional activities related to quality improvement in transfusion practices.
