Implementing AABB Standards Pilot Study Model: From Gap Assessment to Sustainable Compliance in Transfusion Services

Proposed Session Description: AABB standards provide high impact framework for transfusion safety, quality systems and continuous improvement improvement but implementing them in low to middle resource settings can be challenging due to workforce variability documentation maturity, infrastructure constraints, and inconsistent hemovigilance practices. This interprofessional session focuses on a real-world implementation for the first time, translating AABB requirements into practical steps that transfusion services can execute within local governance, funding, and operational realities.

Using two interactive case-based scenarios, faculty will guide participants through: (1) performing a structured gap assessment against AABB standards; (2) prioritizing high risk processes (identification, labeling, traceability, component handling, release and transfusion monitoring; (3) building a phased, measurable implementation roadmap and (4) designing competency document control, and deviation/CAPA systems that are sustainable. The session emphasizes how shared roles, communication loops, and team-based metrics strengthen transfusion safety and availability especially during shortages and high-demand periods.
