Proposed Session Description: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy caused by severe deficiency of ADAMTS13 activity, resulting in uncontrolled von Willebrand factor (VWF)-mediated platelet aggregation. Plasma exchange has been the cornerstone of therapy for decades; however, the treatment landscape has rapidly evolved with the advent of recombinant ADAMTS13, anti–VWF nanobody therapy, and emerging gene- and variant-based strategies.
These advances have direct implications for transfusion medicine, therapeutic apheresis, coagulation laboratories, and patient blood management programs. As laboratory professionals and transfusion specialists play a central role in diagnosis, ADAMTS13 testing, plasma product utilization, and monitoring therapeutic response, it is critical that the AABB community understand the scientific basis and clinical integration of these novel therapies.
