AM26-SU-06-L - Beyond the Antibody Screen: Advanced Immunohematology Case Studies in Transfusion Laboratories

Proposed Session Description: This session focuses on rapidly evolving areas of immunohematology practice, including the integration of red cell genotyping into routine antibody investigation workflows and transfusion management for patients with complex serologic findings. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of complex Rh variants, recent updates in D antigen classification, and structured decision making to identify the safest transfusion strategy when only incompatible units are available. The program also addresses the clinical interpretation and application of the Monocyte Monolayer Assay (MMA) and provides guidance on the procurement of rare red blood cell units through the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP).
Unlike traditional antibody identification lectures, this program is built around progressive, real world case scenarios that increase in complexity as they unfold. Participants are actively engaged through audience driven decision making, with direct comparison of serologic and molecular approaches to case resolution. The practical application of the MMA is highlighted to support assessment of antibody clinical significance and to guide transfusion decisions in challenging clinical situations.
